Washington Post and Hinduphobia

In our world of constant change, many entrenched paradigms and worldviews are being challenged by marginalized voices. As a patriotic American, I consider these healthy debates as another stage in the series of progressive movements, like civil rights, feminism, gay rights and other movements that started as underdogs and outsiders to the established power structure and had to battle at great expense for... Supplementing the information on Sambhaji Brigade

http://www.the-week.com/24apr25/currentevents_article1.htm

From the reading of this article, it appears smabhaji brigade in non-hindutva movement in total. where in the pea brain (like manager used to say!!) of mr vedantam that this grroup became a HINDUTVA movement.

A native of Bhat Shirpura village in the drought-hit Osmanabad district in Maharashtra, Meghraj greets visitors by saying 'Jai Jijau' instead of the traditional 'Namaskar'. The expression hails Chhatrapati Shivaji's mother, Jijabai. "I am not a Hindu, I am a follower of Shiv Dharma," Meghraj explains on being prodded by his father, Janak. The family swears by Shiv Dharma, the new religion which is expected to give an impetus to the 'Brahminetar' (non-Brahmin) movement in Maharashtra.

....
"Sambhaji Brigade is a non-political organisation for youth from non-Brahmin communities including Muslims," said Anant Chondhe, Marathwada division president of the brigade and an accused in the vandalism case.

I will focus on just one aspect in Mr.Vedantam’s feature, “Wrath Over a Hindu God; U.S. Scholars' Writings Draw Threats From Faithful”

Mr.Vedantam writes:

“..Another nationalist group called the Sambhaji Brigade stormed the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in the city of Pune, and destroyed priceless manuscripts. The reason? Laine had done research there.”

Look at the last sentence. See how Mr. Vedantam melodramatically asks—‘The Reason?’ and answers, “Laine had done research there”, as if there is no any other reason possible at all why sambhaji Brigade could attack BORI.

***********************************************************
A quick google advance search using the key words ‘Bhandarkar Institute’ and ‘Sambhaji Brigade’, however reveals altogether different story why Sambhaji Brigade attacked BORI. I will provide few sample evidences from various sources which were written after sambhaji Brigade attacked BORI and much before Mr.Vedantam did his feature.
***********************************************************
1. ‘The politics of attack on Bhandarkar Institute’ by Asghar Ali Engineer in Secular Perspective, February 1-15, 2004

“It is quite significant to note that the alleged remarks against Shivaji and his mother were made by James Laine, not by anyone associated with the Bhandarkar Oriental Institute and yet this Institute was ransacked. If the leaders of the Sambhaji Brigade really wanted to show their love for Shivaji they should have demanded ban on the books instead of ransacking of the famous Institute. But they chose to vandalise Bhandarkar Institute instead.

Thus the purpose was not so much as to protest against Bhandarkar Institute but to attack the institute considered to be the storehouse of Brahmanical knowledge and controlled by the Brahmins. And that is why they raised the slogan "yeh to ek jhanki hai, abhi Shaniwarwada baqi hai" i.e. it is just the beginning and Shaniwarwada is yet to be attacked.

The attack was not so much on the books as on the Brahminism and Brahminical culture.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note how Mr. Engineer is giving an altogether different reason why Sambhaji Brigade attacked BORI.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. “Politics and the cult of the Chhatrapati” The Hindu, Thursday, Apr 01, 2004

“The iconic status of the Maratha king is such that both the Congress-NCP and the Shiv Sena-BJP are trying to claim his mantle, says Ranjit Hoskote”

“It also reveals why Maharashtra's major political formations — the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) coalition and the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance — vie with each other to monopolise the cult of the Chhatrapati.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note again the different reason The Hindu provides: that it is got to do more with politics rather than a genuine anger over Laine’s remarks about Shivaji
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. “Politics of vandalism” by ANUPAMA KATAKAM in the Frontline, Volume 21 - Issue 02, January 17 - 30, 2004
http://www.flonnet.com/fl2102/stories/20040130003802800.htm

--“ The institute, one of the country's premier research centres for Orientology, has become a victim of what is now known as cultural terrorism and also the politics of a caste feud in Maharashtra.”

--"The Sambhaji Brigade came out of nowhere," says Bahulkar. "Obviously there are some anti-social elements who wanted to create trouble and they used the controversy as a tool to further their cause." The attack appeared to have been planned meticulously. The attackers barged into the premises, cut the telephone lines, broke up into small groups of 10 and 15 and finished their task in half an hour. "This was not a spontaneous reaction to a derogatory remark," he told Frontline. But why did they react so late? It is hardly likely that any of these people would have read the book. Who backed them or who organised them?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Again Note the reason: it is more to do with caste and related politics and other ulterior motive and not merely anger over Laine’s remarks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FURTHER:

“IRONICALLY, the Sambhaji Brigade destroyed a huge collection of books on Shivaji and damaged a portrait of him, which the BORI had received from the British Museum. "Is this any way to revere a king?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is ironic indeed! The Sambhaji Brigade who were supposed to be upset about remarks on Shivaji because they have so much reverence for Shivaji, destroying Shivaji’s portrait!! This clearly shows that Sambhaji Brigade cares a hoot about Shivaji and have some other ulterior motive behind the attack.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FURTHER:

---Their letter to OUP states: "Though we do believe in freedom of expression, we cannot subscribe to the practice of maligning the life and character of any person, especially of one who commands the love, respect and admiration of crores of people and is a source of inspiration to them, by casting baseless aspersions."

---According to another historian of the group, "Laine's remark on Shivaji' parentage is factually incorrect and there is not a shred of evidence to support it." He told Frontline that if Laine were a responsible historian, he would have realised that such a statement without substantive evidence backing it would have serious ramifications.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Why did Mr.Vedantam did not mention this important piece of information in his feature??
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. “Marathas blast Sambhaji Brigade” in Indian express, Jnuary 21, 2004

http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=73923

It’s a fresh chapter in the James Laine controversy, but with a twist in the tale. A newly-formed Maratha Yuvak Parishad, that marks the coming together of various bahujan samaj organisations and representatives from Pune district, today strongly opposed ‘‘the political and caste’’ motivations of the Maratha Seva Sangh and its youth wing, Sambhaji Brigade, which led to the attack on the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please note the words in quotation marks-- ‘‘the political and caste’’ motivations of the Maratha Seva Sangh and its youth wing, Sambhaji Brigade
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. From http://www.sabrang.com/cc/archive/2004/jan04/cover.html ,January 2004
Year 10 No.95, Cover Story

---The attack coincides with the upcoming elections and that is not mere coincidence.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sabrang gives another possible reason why Sambhaji Brigade attacked BORI: the attck could be something to do with elections.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Comments:

1.From the above information, it is very easy to deduce that Sambhaji Brigade has some other motives which are not directly related to Laine’s remarks on Shivaji. They seem to have exploited Laine’s remarks to further their goals.

2.the above information is freely available on the web and is dated much before Mr.Vedantam’s feature published in WP( April 10, 2004)

3.Agreed that Mr. Vedantam doesn’t need to or have resources to access all the available information on the web or else where. But the above information was obtained with out much effort and quickly. All one has to do is type the relevant key words.

If Mr.vedantam counter argues that he doesn’t use web to find some preliminary information for getting some broad clues for his work would be unbelievable in today’s world.

But if he still insists that he did not use web to find out information, then one wonders what is the basis for his proclamation that the Sambhaji Brigade attacked BORI because “Laine had done research there”

4.I have provided only five sources due to lack of time but there many other such sources on the web, which taken together convincingly prove that Sambhaji Brigade did not attack BORI just because Laine had done research there!

5.The above information also shows that Mr.Vedantam either has not bothered about collecting crucial information to find out exactly what are the motives of Smbhaji Brigade( which indicates lack of thorough professionalism) or having found out deliberately ignored it so that he could say, “ The reason? Laine had done research there.”(Which indicates that there is some hidden motive for preparing the feature.)

6. Why did the attck took place almost 6 months after dr. Laine's book was released? Why Did Mr.Vedantam fail to address this important question?

PS: I know this is not very well presented. But then readers should please note that I am neither a reporter/journalist nor trained in writing. Having said that, I never knew that it is simple to do some features for mags/papers, may be even for Washington Post.

Friends,

Ever since I started to write for Sulekha to challenge prevailing paradigms, there have been one or two individuals (under different names each time) who repeat the same kind of comment. These have NO bearing on the content of the column whatsoever. It has to do with me in ways that would serve to detract from the topic. Most if not all of these comments are false but the idea is to get people into a side fight and forget why we are here. Since these abuses, even if they were true, would not dilute the positions being debated, they dont matter. Its best to ignore and post something of one's own to get the irrelevant item off the comment board.

My sense is that there is heat on Mr. Vedantam from within the Post, and they must have asked him to go and do damage control. But he did not expect his ploy to backfire like it did. The readers on Sulekha are not gullible on these matters the way the Post's readers are largely naive about India. His Hinduphobia comes out in his very style of self-defence.

Regards,

Rajiv

vaidix,

better would be to post a banner before the message board in each page to put a disclaimer or the pointed guidelines.

ALso instead of deleting the post, they could insert a warning to a particular post indicting how it transgresses thier policy(they have to have a policy first!)

  vaidix posted 4 yrs ago

It may be a good idea if Sulekha occassionally discloses reasons for deleting posts.

Deleting posts may be some times justified, when people post URLs that divert traffic from this site, or when people quote names of third parties other than what is available in public domain in a way that invites law suits.

mr Malhotra

"First of all, I am glad that Mr. Vedantam has entered this dialog on Sulekha, where nobody gets home turf advantage. "

I doubt this one. On the message board of the article by shr vedantam lots of messages have been deleted by suleha moderators. Most of those deleted were quoting shankars website and articles to make a point that this hindupohobia is ingrained in the saja types.

If you dont know they did this earlier wrt victor menezes article when they took out the whole comments section where there were some very inconvenient questions about the sources of funds

This is an interesting article to contrast the coverage of a controversial Christian issue:

Controversial Virgin Mary film defended

This is a case of scholarship with a more factual basis than the Courtright fantasies.

"The programme also questions the Biblical story of Mary's divine conception of Jesus Christ.
